Fenchihu Railway Station – The Largest Stop-off Point of Alishan Forest Railways

Fenchihu Railway Station was the largest stop-off point of Alishan Forest Railways and also the major centre for repair and maintenance. The forest train would stop at Fenchihu Railway Station to refuel. Today, visitors may find old steam locomotives, old-engine models, refuel station, as well as a number of pictures displaying the glorious history of Alishan Forest Railways at the Train Garage next to the Century-Old Fenchihu Railway Station.

Alishan Forest Railways – The World Renowned Forest Railway

Alishan Forest Railways plays an important role in the world railways. It is one of the three major railways in the world along with Darjeeling Himalyan Railway in India, and Andes Mountains Railway in Chile. Alishan Forest Railway was first established during the Japanese colonial period as the logging track for transporting precious Alishan cypress woods down the mountain. It was first managed by private firm but later operated by the government due to financial black holes. Alishan Forest Railways once suspended during the construction period due to the complexity and steepness of terrain such as zigzag slopes and switchbacks. This world-famous forest railway is a fabulous work, with several steep gradients, a spiral and four switchbacks and climbs through the most dramatic climate changes of any railways of its kind in the world that is worth to visit once in a lifetime.

Century-Old Fenchihu Railway Station

The wooden building is the former railway station of Fenchihu that was built before the opening of Alishan Forest Railway in 1912. This century-old railway station was built by valuable cypress woods. It has been well-preserved, and now serves as the office of forest rangers. In addition, there are a few century-old azalea trees in front of the station that blossom all-year-round that can hardly be found elsewhere.
